Rep. Barton Calls Expected FCC Net Neutrality Ruling "Net Nonsense"

Rep. Joe Barton (R-TX) issued the following statement in advance of Thursday's meeting of the Federal Communications Commission where new "net neutrality" rules are expected to be approved. This action will reclassify broadband internet access services and allow it to be regulated under Title II of the Communications Act.

"Tomorrow, the FCC is expected to announce a rule that puts the Internet under Title II regulation. They call it net neutrality, but it's not net neutrality - it is net nonsense. Since 1996, Congress has treated the Internet as a service with a competitive model based on markets and because of that, online innovation and access to the Internet have exploded. If the FCC tries to move forward with this net nonsense, it isn't going to stand -- the courts won't allow it, Congress won't allow it.

"I believe in an open internet that is driven by markets and competition, not by government regulation created by bureaucrats at the FCC in Washington."
